Student-Centered Accountability and reporting

Colorado’s accountability system is designed to meet the needs of large districts and is based on a single measure. For rural communities, this often means there are multiple categories where they don’t receive a rating due to their small “n” size. Additionally, communities largely don’t know how to interpret state district performance frameworks in a way that supports their engagement in making the school successful.

OUR CURRENT WORK

  • The Student-Centered Reporting Solution (SCRS): This homegrown technology solution currently serves 24 school districts across Colorado, bringing together education leaders, researchers, policy makers, technology funders and programmers to remove persistent barriers to addressing equity in education. Rather than being a product provided by a tech vendor, the project uses the EdFi standard to support grassroots Colorado Rural Education Collaborative (CREC) efforts across districts in reporting out to their local communities in support of their vision to achieve equitable, student-centered teaching and learning.

  • NE BOCES: This project serves three rural Colorado public school districts: Plateau, Revere, and Yuma. It focuses on enabling the use of an assessment tool that has value to key stakeholders and creation of dashboard reports that will allow stakeholders to see the success of the school systems. Specifically, this project:

    • Create a stakeholder-focused Accountability Dashboard that clearly shows the students, parents, educators and community the growth and achievement of students so this information can be used to drive instructional change.

    • Adapt and align the Unified Improvement Plan to NWEA measurements to create local goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, research-based, and timely by creating a dedicated accountability website that includes NWEA data as a supplemental performance framework.

  • The Student-Centered Accountability Program (S-CAP), is a collaborative effort by rural districts in Colorado to create a more comprehensive and actionable system of accountability than the state District and School Performance Framework.

    • The S-CAP districts are committed to accountability that factors in the "whole child" and the school environment as part of continuous improvement rather than relying on a single test score. This approach enables stakeholders to have the information needed to make sound strategic decisions and investments.

    • The CREC was able to see value in a fledgling idea at an early stage, be a thought partner on the project, and get it ready to fly on its own. Our work helped the program go farther faster, growing the number of participating districts to 15, and made the project a reality.
