Position Summary: The Student Advocate works with principals, school counselors and other district staff to support Tier II and Tier III student behaviors. The Student Advocate coordinates with outside agencies to provide additional support to students and families and serves as a point of contact for transition services from intensive and therapeutic settings.

Position Responsibilities:

• Ability to provide appropriate counseling treatments to individual students and in group settings.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to recognize and identify students in need of intensive therapeutic counseling services.
• Apply knowledge of human growth and development and child psychology as it relates to children 5-21.
• Respond to mental health crises and needs by offering education, prevention, and access to crisis/short term counseling. Make referrals to community resources as needed. 
• Assist the school in effective and timely response to crisis: Attend Trauma Response Training as delegated by principal. Participate on the Trauma Response Team OR upon request, provide support for the Trauma Response Team Member responding to crisis. Collaborate with the principal when a crisis occurs in our own building to provide as-needed planning, support, intervention, and advocacy in response to individual or school wide crisis.
• Collaborate with school counselors, principals, teachers, and staff.
• Provide and support substance abuse therapies to students.
• Provide and/or coordinate prevention programming to students, parents, and staff about substance abuse, mental health, and crisis intervention strategies.
• Recognize and educate cultural competency and cultural bias.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
• Excellent problem solving and multitasking abilities
• Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Possess strong ability to visually display data in an easy-to-understand format.
• Knowledge of Colorado and federal school law
• Knowledge of research-based practices, and trends in school counseling
• Knowledge of Colorado laws and requirements in school counseling and legal responsibilities as a school counselor/school district employee
• Knowledge of special education law and practices
• Knowledge of, and experience with, diverse populations of learners
• Knowledge of community resources that further support students and families
• Ability to communicate effectively to diverse groups of people
• Ability to manage multiple projects in an effective and timely manner

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in education
• Colorado Special Service Provider Licensure and/or enrollment in an appropriate program for licensure
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification within 2 months of employment
• CPR/First Aid training and certification within 2 months of employment

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experiences as a school counselor, crisis counselor, and/or interventionist
• Experience working with school-age children

Essential Physical Requirements:
• Ability to travel between schools during the workday
