Title: Building Principal

Definition:
The Building Principal serves as the instructional leader of the school and supervises all certified/licensed and classified staff within their school building.

Qualifications:
-Appropriate Colorado administrative certificate or license that meets Highly Qualified status for Colorado school -administrators.
-At least five years of successful teaching and/or school administrative experience.
-Master’s degree, from a regionally accredited institution of higher education approved for graduate programs, with emphasis in school administration or commensurate programming preparation.
-Demonstrated ability to implement effective education and public relations.
-Organizational skills to complete tasks responsibly.
-Excellent human relations skills and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately with respect, diplomacy, and sensitivity, guarding the dignity of each individual.
-Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to work with a variety of people and circumstances.
-Effective technology skills required, including strong ability in using spreadsheets, word processing, PowerPoint, Publisher, posting information to the website, and adaptability to emerging technologies for productivity and instructional enhancement.
-Ability to review and analyze student performance data and implement leadership decisions accordingly.
-Ability to work collaboratively with staff and administration to fully engage in research-based leadership and educational strategies and activities to improve student performance and the educational quality of the school/district.

Reports to: Superintendent of Schools

Job Goals:
-Take active leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional and operational programs related to the appropriate school level.
-Promote the successful educational growth and safety of each student in the school, through the use of supervisory and administrative skills.
-Adopt the general program of education approved by the Board of Education to meet the needs of the students.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional
-Responsible to the superintendent of schools and functions in a collaborative manner with the superintendent and the School -Board to provide for the success of all students.
-Understand the educational needs of the students served by the school and develop plans for meeting these needs.
-Initiate, design, and implement programs to meet the specific needs of the school, while fully supporting and incorporating the goals and programs established at the District level.
-Supervise the instructional programs within the school.
-Supervise the teaching processes within the school.
-Implement and supervise the special education program within the school in conjunction and partnership with South Central BOCES.
-Utilize all resources and tangible and intangible assets of the school system and the community in developing the most effective educational programs.
-Budget school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction.
-Supervise and evaluate the extracurricular program within the school.
-Maintain responsibility for the planning, organization, and implementation of all school activities.
-Direct the co-curricular program within the school in partnership with the Athletic/Activities Director.
-Establish and maintain an effective learning climate, including leading the review and analysis of data.
-Assist in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of the District curriculum.
-Direct and implement student behavioral programs and/or interventions according to the rules and regulations defined by CDE and District policy. Implements new learning from staff development opportunities and adopts updated strategies and expectations to support ongoing district and school improvement initiatives.

Administration and Management of School Business
-Collaborate with District administration, supervisors, and/or directors to effectively utilize support services such as maintenance, transportation, security, food services, recreational programs, and financial and accounting functions as they affect school operations.
-Evaluate staff in accordance with District policy.
-Prepare or supervise the preparation of all reports, records, lists, and all other material required by the district administration.
-Assume accountability for the ethical and appropriate administration of student assessment including CDE-required testing.
-Assist in the management and preparation of the district budget. Prepare and submit budgetary requests relative to the school and monitor expenditure of funds. Approve requests for purchases and services required by staff.
-Assume supervisory responsibility within Board and CDE parameters for the funds generated by various student activities within the assigned building(s).
-Maintain a complete inventory of all equipment assigned to the school building.
-Assume responsibility for the safety and operation of the school plant.
-Coordinate student body fundraising activities within appropriate Board policies.

Community Relations
-Act as liaison between the school and the community.
-Interpret activities and policies of the school and the district to the community and encourage community participation.
-Develop an informational program of public relations in order to further the community’s understanding and support of the educational program.
-Organize and meet regularly with the building accountability committee, and provide leadership that encourages participation in decisions affecting the school.
-Establish and maintain favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for school objectives and programs.
-Interpret Board policies and administrative directives to the community.
-Establish and maintain favorable relationships with District and state groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for school objectives and programs, including but not limited to District administrators, Board of Education, and staff from CDE.
